#Presentacion de la farandula.#


A las tres de la tarde el sol enfilaba todavia sus rayos por la calle de
Serrano banandola casi toda de viva y rojiza luz, que heria la vista de
los que bajaban por la acera de la izquierda mas poblada de casas. Mas
como el frio era intenso, los transeuntes no se apresuraban a pasar a la
acera contraria en busca de los espacios sombreados: preferian recibir
de lleno en el rostro los dardos solares, que al fin, si molestaban,
tambien calentaban. A paso lento y menudo, con el manguito de rica piel
de nutria puesto delante de los ojos a guisa de pantalla, bajaba a tal
hora y por tal calle una senora elegantemente vestida. Tras si dejaba
una estela perfumada que los tenderos plantados a la puerta de sus
comercios aspiraban extasiados, siguiendo con la vista el foco de donde
partian tan gratos efluvios. Porque la calle de Serrano, con ser la mas
grande y hermosa de Madrid, tiene un caracter marcadamente provincial:
poco trafago; tiendas sin lujo y destinadas en su mayoria a la venta de
